The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for a bit of good news, with things not looking too good at Stamford Bridge at present. They’re now out of the Carabao Cup, looking unlikely to challenge for the Premier League title, and with a game against Barcelona on the horizon – it’s fair to say that most aren’t giving them any chance of progressing much further in Europe.
All is not lost, of course, and there is time for Antonio Conte to turn things around, but it’s been a very disappointing month or so for the Blues.
Undoubtedly one of Europe’s best goalkeepers, Thibaut Courtois has continued to be crucial for the Blues this season – with his fantastic shot stopping, aerial dominance and quick thinking goalkeeping keeping Antonio Conte’s men in games on more than one occasion this season.
His current deal expires in the summer of 2019, making this decision a real priority for Chelsea. If they head into the summer with just a year remaining on his contract, the Blues could risk losing him for a reduced fee, or – perhaps even worse – he could choose to run down his deal and leave on a free upon the expiry of his deal.
Both of those situations would be awful for the Blues, and so the optimism currently being championed by the Chelsea board is promising for the club.
Landlord’s Verdict
Courtois’ retention will is key for the club.
At present, there is arguably nobody better. He’s been a fantastic replacement for Petr Cech, and the longer that the Blues can keep him at Stamford Bridge, the more chance they’ll have of long-term success.
