Chelsea on alert as January target rejects contract offer

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are pretty concerned about Marcos Alonso’s long-term role in the Blues’ first team…

The Spaniard has looked good this season, but he has undoubtedly looked shaky when facing higher-tier opposition – and that will give Antonio Conte cause for concern going forward.

Offensively, he is stellar – but his inconsistency at the back when defending has worried a few of the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern – and they feel that a bit of extra depth on that side of the defence is essential for the second-half of the season.

They were pleased, then, when reports via the Sun linked the Blues with a move for Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam – with the defender’s contract expiring in 18 months.

Now, it would appear as though the deal is looking more likely – with the Evening Standard reporting that Ghoulam has rejected the offer of a new contract at Napoli – likely leaving Chelsea hopeful that a deal can be made.

The Evening Standard also notes that as of yet, Napoli are yet to offer him exactly what he wants – a further £10,000 per week wage increase and a buy-out clause – neither of which are on the table as of yet.

Whilst this is not confirmation that a deal is ready to be made, it certainly will provide Chelsea with a boost – knowing that they could offer Ghoulam the money that he desires.

A speedy, offensive wing-back, Ghoulam would fit perfectly into Antonio Conte’s system – though the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are slightly concerned that his lack of defensive efficiency will cause the same issues that are prevalent when Marcos Alonso plays.

Our landlord thinks that the deal would certainly make sense, though, considering how well the defender has performed during his tenure in Serie A. See some of his best bits below…
