The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about their side’s lack of defensive depth…
The Blues have enough central defenders, but there is a real problem out wide. Victor Moses has done well so far this summer, whilst Marcos Alonso was one of the stars of the show last season for the Blues.
But that said, beyond that talented duo – Antonio Conte doesn’t have much choice. Indeed, he’s had to settle for an out-of-position Cesar Azpilicueta at points, which is far from ideal.
With just a few hours to go until the window closes, though, Chelsea don’t have a lot of time, and so according to the Daily Star, they are considering a surprise move before the clock strikes 11 pm.
The Daily Star are reporting that Chelsea could make a surprise move for Bacary Sagna, formerly of Arsenal and Man City, as Conte looks to plug a rather significant gap in his squad.
Sagna is currently a free agent, which would make his acquisition more of a simple one – but he would certainly not be Chelsea’s first choice. He’s past his best, and given that he is in his mid-30s, he’ll only be a short term fix for the Blues.
Still, he has experience and on his day he is good enough. Now it’s up to the Blues to weigh up the move and make it happen should they decide to.
Landlord’s Verdict
Sagna was a fantastic servant for Arsenal and Man City, and so in that sense, a move would be good.
He is, for the most part, reliable and solid – whilst the financial outlay that his signing would demand might also be attractive. That being said, he isn’t a spectacular player, and so the Blues would be wise to, at least, consider other options.
If Conte is looking for a cheap depth option, though, he could be perfect.
