The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been pretty pleased with Antonio Conte’s management this season. The Italian is doing his best to turn things around at Stamford Bridge after a mixed start to the season, and the fruits of his labour have certainly been seen over the last few weeks. The Blues have looked great lately, and that’s a testament to the manager’s decision making.
Perhaps the most significant decision that the Italian has made so far this term surrounds David Luiz. The Brazilian has found himself on the bench lately in favour of Andreas Christensen, with the Dane impressing. It would be no real surprise to learn that Luiz is unhappy at that situation, but it is a bit of a shock to learn that he could soon be replaced in the Chelsea first team entirely. As the Daily Mail reports, Real Madrid are said to be looking at the Brazilian – but that is not the most interesting story within their report.
Interestingly, the Blues are also said to have been making their own moves in this saga, with the Daily Mail noting that the club have scouted Mouctar Diakhaby in recent weeks. A central defender by trade, the Blues could well be viewing the 20-year-old as a potential replacement for their Brazilian defender.
It’s unlikely to be a coincidence that Chelsea are targeting a new defender in light of the David Luiz situation, with the 30-year-old unlikely to be happy at his new-found bit-part role. He’s been a regular since moving to Stamford Bridge, and with the January window edging closer, anything could happen over the coming weeks.
Landlord’s Verdict
If Luiz does leave, the Blues will need a replacement, and Diakhaby would be a decent option. He’s been a regular for Lyon in Ligue 1 this season, having made 6 appearences so far, and with a fantastic range of passing and excellent concentration, the defender would be a logical replacement for Luiz.
He’d also be a great option for the future, having already had a lot of experience despite being just 20-years-old. If Luiz doesn’t start playing more often, this move could develop quickly.
