Chelsea seriously should sign this Celtic player in the next few days, here’s 2 reasons why..

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern don’t know what to make of reports linking Celtic shot-stopper Craig Gordon with a move to Stamford Bridge…

After all, with the trio of Thibaut Courtois, Asmir Begovic and Eduardo at Stamford Bridge – Antonio Conte would struggle to improve on his options between the sticks.

Thibaut Courtois is, of course, Conte’s first choice – though an injury to him would mean a starting berth for Asmir Begovic – meaning that strength is absolutely vital in the position.

However, with reports linking Asmir Begovic with a move to Bournemouth, Conte’s hand could be forced – with a quality backup option an absolute necessity for the Italian boss.

Whilst not a particularly high profile option, Craig Gordon does tick a lot of the boxes for Antonio Conte – and the more you analyse it, the more a deal for him does actually make a lot of sense.

With that said, Chelsea seriously should sign this Celtic player in the next few days, here’s 2 reasons why..

 Experience

One of the most important traits of a backup goalkeeper is experience, given the situation that they will be in. Asmir Begovic has hardly played for the Blues, but when he has been called upon he has been thrust into action – and experience is needed for that.

He can be stationary for months at a time, and at a moment’s notice he could become a vital part of proceedings.

A young goalkeeper may struggle to cope and deal with the situation, and that is why a goalkeeper with years of experience behind him is important.

Craig Gordon certainly has that, having been a standout figure for the likes of Sunderland and Celtic during an impressive career.

At 34-years-old, he has done it all – and his spell with Sunderland also means that he is well versed about life in the Premier League.

A top-class keeper is never going to be happy to be second choice, and so experience is the next best thing.

 Cost

At 34-years-old, and a contract expiring at the end of the year, Craig Gordon will likely be a relatively cheap option for Antonio Conte.

This is important, as the fee being talked about for Asmir Begovic is around £12 million – and it would only make sense if Chelsea will make a profit on the Bosnian.

If Chelsea can get Gordon for around the £5-8 million mark – it would be great business for Chelsea.
