Chelsea still hopeful of securing deal for 23-year-old midfielder – report

For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, another player or two is needed before the transfer window shuts…

The Blues’ squad depth is still very limited, and if Antonio Conte wants to challenge on all fronts this season, he needs more bodies to be made available to him.

One player that Chelsea are reportedly keen on is Ross Barkley, whom the Blues are said to have made a £25 million move for last night.

That has now been rejected, according to Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph, but that does not suggest that a deal won’t happen. Rather, according to Law, Chelsea are still hopeful of securing a deal for the Englishman, with talks continuing throughout today.

It’s clear that Chelsea are very interested in Barkley, and whilst they have been rebuffed in their approach, the move could still happen.

It’s a deal that make sense. Barkley is young and English, and whilst he has been out of sorts lately, his talent is clear for all to see. If his form manages to turn around, a move could be seen as a coup in a few years time.

With deadline day quickly approaching, though, Chelsea need to move quickly.

Landlord’s Verdict

Barkley, despite his flaws, is a top young player. He hasn’t hit the heights that were expected of him as a teenager, but his quality is evident.

He still is young enough to turn his career around, and on his day he has flourished over the last year.

Antonio Conte could be the manager to get the best out of him, but with Everton standing firm, it’s going to take a lot for Chelsea to tie this deal up.
