If the Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have taken anything from their season so far, it is that Chelsea desperately need more squad depth…
Granted, Chelsea have enjoyed a fantastic start to the Premier League season, with Antonio Conte’s side at the top of the Premier League table – having beaten main title rivals Man City last weekend.
However, Chelsea’s reliance on their set first team has been clear for all to see – with Conte opting to start the same 11 players for the best part of 2 months.
This is something that simply cannot be allowed to go on long-term, as it could cost the Blues – and the overreliance is particularly clear in the heart of the midfield.
Cesc Fabregas doesn’t fit the system, and Conte cannot rely on Matic and Kante forever – so he must look elsewhere.
Unfortunately for the Blues in the Tavern, though, it would appear that midfield depth will not come in the form of long-term target Radja Nainggolan.
According to Calcio Mercato, AS Roma Director of Sport Frederic Massara is looking to renew the contract of Nainggolan – with Roma looking to tie down a number of their most important players to long-term deals.
This has come as a blow for the Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern – with Nainggolan touted by many as the perfect midfield player for the Premier League.
With a new deal for the Belgian a priority for Roma, it would appear as though the Blues are going to have to look elsewhere. Our landlord thinks that maybe Chelsea should start utilising their fantastic youth system – with Nathaniel Chalobah looking more than ready for a Premier League starting berth.
