Chelsea and Liverpool fans alike have been left scratching their heads in the Transfer Tavern, after a surprising report emerged.
The Times states new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is eyeing a tactical reshuffle at Stamford Bridge and is considering a move for Liverpool striker Christian Benteke, as an alternative to current forward Diego Costa.
Benteke only joined the Reds last summer in a £32.5m deal from Aston Villa but struggled to impress at Anfield, scoring just 10 goals in 43 appearances, and speculation suggests he may not be a part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans for the next season.
In recent years Chelsea have adopted a style that has seen them play just one striker, usually Diego Costa, but Conte is keen to move back into a two-striker system, eyeing a potential 3-3-4 formation that was used by Italy during their 2-0 win over Belgium at Euro 2016.
That would see Costa and Benteke link-up in the middle, with the likes of Eden Hazard or Pedro Rodriguez supporting from out wide, but our landlord has expressed concerned as he feels a side with just three defenders cannot succeed in the Premier League.
