Roma forward Mirko Vucinic will be hoping to make an impression against minnows England tonight, with a literal host of Premier League clubs after his signature. Liverpool, Chelsea, United and City have all been linked with a move for the Montenegrin, eliciting a professional response from Vucinic:
“I am very happy there is a lot of interest from the Premier League, and I hope to do my best and have a great game. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world. I just have to keep playing my football in the best possible manner.”
Well handled, Mirko.
Liverpool’s interest, naturally, would depend on the outcome of the proposed takeover by John Henry/Peter Lim/any connoisseurs of sinking ships who have £300million knocking about. It’s difficult to tell how much Henry or Lim would be prepared to throw into the transfer kitty, therefore difficult to measure the likelihood of Liverpool buying expensive Serie A players.
United obviously wouldn’t be able to afford him. In fact, it’s difficult to see United winning a ‘transfer race’ with just about anyone at the moment. There was hardly much competition for the signatures of Smalling, Hernandez and Bebe. Oh, of course … Real Madrid were in for Bebe. Sure they were.
Vucinic scored a brace against Chelsea in the Champions League in 2008, and declared his admiration for armband-obsessed captain John Terry recently: “J.T. is without doubt one of the great defenders.” And, in a rare attempt at neutrality, I’ll concede that Chelsea would be the most attractive proposition right now.
And lastly, there’s Manchester City. City, I’m sure, would happily buy Vucinic, if only to beat the other three to the signing: United in particular. But, I guess, this is the new world order. It seems, ultimately, to be between City and Chelsea. It depends on what he prefers: money or success.
