Chelsea continue to fly high at the top of the Premier League, and the Blues fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving every moment.
Last year’s lowly 10th place league finish seems a long time ago now as Antonio Conte’s management has restored balance and power to the side.
Two of the Blues’ best players in Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have been back to their best this season, scoring and assisting regularly.
In midfield, meanwhile, Nemanja Matic and N’golo Kante have controlled the middle of the park expertly, blending industry and awareness.
However, despite Chelsea’s vastly improved performances, there are still a number of frailties that have the potential to derail their season. These have been exposed by both Spurs and City this year, although neither could convert their chances into three points.
As Chelsea look to win another Premier League title, they would do well to get rid of players that either compound their problems or contribute little to the team effort.
That in mind, then, our landlord thinks that Conte should sell these two players in January…
Gary Cahill
This might strike some as a controversial choice, but the England centre back is proving a thorn in his own side’s defence.
Cahill’s calamitous own goal against Manchester City on the weekend was a shocking reminder of his lack of dexterity, while he was constantly caught out of position and relied on David Luiz to cover for him.
What is worse for Cahill, is that Luiz is finally looking like the player Chelsea fans were hoping for in his first stint at the club.
Chelsea, then, should look to find a better alternative to play alongside the much-improved Brazilian defender.
John Obi Mikel
The Nigerian captain has not played once for Chelsea this season, and only has six months left on his current contract. With Fabregas as Conte’s preferred midfield back-up and Chelsea playing well, Mikel looks set to remain on the sidelines.
In an interview with the BBC World Service, the Nigerian said ‘we will see what happens in January’ amid questions over his future. This sounds very much like Mikel is open to plying his trade at a new club.
There is no doubt that Mikel can be proud of his achievements at the Bridge, helping Chelsea win ten major trophies during his stay. However, there is no room in football for sentiment, just maybe a pint if you ever fancy popping into the Transfer Tavern, John Obi!
