Although Manchester City are a team which have spiralled to success within the last decade, the club’s history may reveal a lot more than you think.

The Citizens first recorded game was played way back in 1880 with the team under the name of St Mark’s. Bumpy fields, cricket venues, City’s early days were conventional of teams starting up around that era.

Now, in 2017, they stand as the sixth most valuable football club in the world, according to Forbes, with a total worth of $1.9 billion (£1.5 billion.)

Since 2010, City have racked up an impressive five major trophies under their belt, two of which were the Premier League.

Currently sitting second in the league, and in the round of 16 of both the FA Cup (with a replay for the last eight) and Champions League, it’s possible that City could even rack up more trophies by the end of the season.

Taking these stats and facts into account, here’s two things that you may not have known about Manchester City – as per our landlord…

They Went 35 Years Without A Trophy

As mentioned earlier, City really are a club who have sky-rocketed in the last decade. The proof is in the pudding when you consider that up until winning the FA Cup in 2011, Man City went 35 years without a single trophy.

Prior to this, the side’s last piece of silverware came back in 1976, when they beat Newcastle United 2-1 to lift the League Cup. This game was most notably remembered for the winning goal that Dennis Tueart scored, a stunning overhead kick just one minute into the second half. Ironically, Tueart was born in Newcastle!

Their Top Goalscorer is Eric Brook

Described as one of the great names of British football, unfortunately Eric Brook is a name that will leave many fans, including those of City, with a puzzled look on their face.

In his eleven years at City from 1928-1939, the English forward racked up a total of 178 goals for his club. The only current City player who comes close to Brook’s record is Sergio Aguero, who as it stands is just 22 goals away from equalling Brooks’ 178.
