Dominic Calvert-Lewin would have been as surprised as anyone in Goodison Park when his blocked effort from David de Gea’s clearance ended up in the back of the net, but it was the start of a strong showing against Manchester United.
The striker has been in fine goalscoring form lately, finding the target eight times in ten matches, but it was his all-round display that got fans talking during and after the match.
He showed tremendous energy throughout and caused frequent problems for Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, particularly with the proficiency with which he ran the channels.
The 22-year-old thought he won it late on, too, when his strike was deflected into the Red Devils’ goal by Maguire, only to see it disallowed for offside due to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s involvement in distracting De Gea.
Nevertheless, it was a display which raises his stock further and could increase his chances of an England call-up, with Gareth Southgate in attendance to watch his performance.
Here is some of the reaction from Everton fans to his display.
