Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are braced for a very important few months that could determine the direction of the club over the next few years.

That may seem drastic, of course, particularly with United’s spending power and reputation but if things do not go well over the coming months it could make things more difficult than they need to be.

For sure, United need to qualify for next season’s Champions League if they are to carry on in the right direction under Jose Mourinho as well as, possibly, to keep hold of their best players.

Spanish outlet AS is claiming, in fact, that Real Madrid are keen on bringing in David De Gea in the summer in a move that could seriously set United back.

They’ll be hoping a top four finish can help deter that, of course, but our landlord thinks that might not be enough.

That in mind, then, here are two reasons why the Spaniard will be off this summer…

 It’s Real Madrid

Okay, so you might respond with, ‘it’s Manchester United,’ but for pretty much every Spanish player the draw of Los Blancos or Barcelona is often too hard to ignore.

Indeed, the Bernabeu club is looking at the peak of it’s powers at the moment with them top of La Liga with two games in hand. What player in world football wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Our landlord believes De Gea certainly would.

 United’s future remains uncertain

United are on a good run of form at the moment but they still remain in sixth place in the league and have many question marks persisting over them.

David De Gea has stuck by United through a pretty lean patch over the past few years and whilst that’s to be commended, his talent deserves a much higher platform. If United do not qualify for the top four it’ll be curtains and even if they do De Gea might still jump ship.
