Everton: Alan Hutton questions Carlo Ancelotti’s comments on Josh King

Former Premier League defender Alan Hutton has questioned some comments made by Carlo Ancelotti about new Everton signing Josh King.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after the transfer was officially announced by the Goodison Park faithful, the Italian boss confirmed that the Norway international had not been signed to put pressure on the strikers, but to cover all of the attacking positions moving forward.

Should King start for Everton?

No

Ancelotti also confirmed this to the Merseyside club’s official website, adding that the 29-year-old is a ‘powerful player’ who ‘can cover all the positions’.

Nonetheless, Hutton, speaking to Football Insider, thought it was ‘strange’ that King was not bought in to the Toffees for his goals:

“I mean, only time will tell, it was funny, I was listening to Carlo Ancelotti’s press conference and he was saying he hasn’t been bought for goals – being a striker, that’s a bit strange.

“I do see what he’s saying – he’s got pace, he’s something different from what they have, he can play as that second striker, he makes intelligent runs, so maybe they were just looking for something different.

“The big thing is, is he going to get game time, is he going to play in that team? If you move there and he doesn’t really play from now until the end of the season, where do you go next?

“Let’s think it as a positive, he’s going to go there, play well in a team that’s doing decent under a great manager and hopefully, he hits the ground running.”

King still offers a goal threat

Despite the comments made by Ancelotti, King still very much offers his Everton team a goal threat. The striker has scored no fewer than 80 goals at senior level for both club and country so far in his footballing career and has also done it before in the Premier League, with 48 strikes recorded in total over five consecutive terms with AFC Bournemouth (Transfermarkt).

His ability to play in a number of different roles is only an added bonus to the Blues, as the striker is more than capable of backing up the goals scored by Dominic Calvert-Lewin already and thus, he can offer another goal threat.
