Alex Iwobi has revealed the reason why he opted to represent Nigeria on the international stage instead of England.
The Everton winger opened up about his country allegiance during an Instagram Live session (via All Nigeria Soccer), and explained why he opted to wear Nigeria’s colours as a senior international.

“I will always have my respect for England, when I played for England they gave a great opportunity, they treat me very well,” Iwobi said. “However, I feel like I am a true Nigerian, I grew up in the Nigerian culture and when I had the opportunity to go back I felt more at home playing for Nigeria.”
The 24-year-old has been capped 38 times at international level and has scored six goals in that time (via Transfermarkt). Iwobi made his Nigeria debut against Egypt in 2016, coming on as a substitute in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier (via Sky Sports). His appearance for the Super Eagles marked the end of his era as an England youth international.

Iwobi went on to say making the decision was ‘difficult’ but ultimately he enjoys representing the country he was born in.
“Even though the organization may be a bit different to England, I really enjoy it. Even to this day I have no regrets.”
