Everton are eyeing a move for Brazilian defender Matheus Doria of Santos Laguna, according to TodoFichajes (via Sport Witness).
The website (via Sport Witness) are claiming that the Merseysiders are interested in the defender, who has enjoyed a good start to the season in Mexico.
They go on to say that Santos Laguna have set a €12m (roughly £10.6m) price on the 24-year-old.
A move for a central defender could be down to their failure in securing a replacement for the outgoing Zouma, with the club failing to secure a permanent deal for the Frenchman or Marcos Rojo.
To add insult to injury, Marco Silva’s side have enjoyed a less than enjoyable start to their Premier League season. The side has won just two of their six games in the Premier League so far this season, suffering shock losses at the hands of promoted sides Aston Villa and Sheffield United (via WhoScored).
In their six games so far, Everton have conceded nine goals already at an average of over a goal a game (via Tablesleague). At the same stage last season, the club conceded eight goals. This goes to show the desperate need for a centre-half at the club.
Doria would be a good defender to fight some of the teething issues in defence. The centre-half has the experience of playing in Europe, turning out for Yeni Malatyaspor in Turkey, and French side Olympique Marseille.
Everton have showed they need a new centre-back, hence why links with the two-goal Doria make sense. Securing the Brazilian in January would help bring some necessary experience back to the club following Zouma’s exit.
