Everton: Toffees linked with January move for Steven Nzonzi

According to recent reports, Everton are interested in a January move for defensive midfielder, Steven Nzonzi.

The report by Foot Mercato claims that the Toffees, along with Arsenal, are keen on the idea of bringing the 32-year-old to the Premier League, with his parent club, AS Roma, said to be in talks about terminating the midfielder’s current contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season.

So far this season, while on loan at French side Stade Rennais, the £9 million-rated 6 foot 5 man has enjoyed good form over his 17 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.80 – he wins three aerial duels a game, using his enormous frame to good effect.

And, if the reports are to be believed, it would appear as if Carlo Ancelotti is hoping to bring Nzonzi back to the Premier League this month, seemingly as an alternative signing to Sami Khedira, who has also been linked with a January move to the Toffees to the point where Fabrizio Romano claimed the German ace has a “special relationship” with Ancelotti.

Transfer Tavern Take

While it could be argued that Nzonzi would be a handy addition to Everton’s defensive midfield ranks – with Vincenzo Montella previously describing the 32-year-old as a ‘very good‘ and ‘technical‘ player – especially if he is available on a free transfer, his reported wages of £95,000 per week may be an issue at his age.

That said, Khedira is no spring chicken either and won’t exactly be cheap coming as a potential free signing from Juventus, so given Nzonzi’s advantage of having Premier League experience, perhaps the former Stoke City man is the better selection.
