Many Everton supporters have been responding on social media to a tweet shared by the Merseyside outfit, as they named Dominic Calvert-Lewin the fans’ Man of the Match against Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.
Calvert-Lewin struck twice against the Championship side to help ensure the Toffees progressed into the Fourth Round of the tournament, with what were his 19th and 20th goals for the Blues from 100 appearances across all competitions.
The Sheffield-born striker earned the accolade of the fans’ Man of the Match after clinching 68% of the votes, while Djibril Sidibe received 20% and Yerry Mina earned 11%.
As well as his two goals as Everton won 2-0, Calvert-Lewin won three of six aerial duels up against the Owls in either box, as well as penning one clearance, per WhoScored data.
His evening at Hillsborough was not perfect, though, as the 22-year-old was dispossessed thrice, did not register an attempted dribble, and only found teammates with 48% of his 21 attempted passes – the lowest success rate of any outfield player to feature for either side.
Everton supporters have also taken note of their club celebrating Calvert-Lewin holding a one in five strike rate, and suggested that he has found his level up against a second-tier opponent.
Calvert-Lewin’s best campaign in front of goal came last season in the Premier League, where he hit six in 35 outings, enough for one every 295 minutes (TransferMarkt).
The former England U21 international is currently on a hit rate of one every 134 minutes this season across all competitions, having opened his league account against AFC Bournemouth.
