Many Everton supporters have reacted negatively to a recent post on Twitter by Andre Gomes directing them to an interview he carried out with the Daily Mail, where he suggested his move to the Blues was a step forward from his time at Barcelona.
Gomes joined Everton on a permanent deal in the summer, when the Goodison Park natives struck an agreement with Barcelona to turn his loan transfer into a full-time arrangement for £22million (BBC).
The Portuguese midfielder has since featured in four Premier League games for the Toffees (WhoScored), but missed their trip to Bournemouth at the weekend with a rib injury.
He has now spoken about his move with Danny Murphy for the Daily Mail, where he hailed the Goodison Park faithful as a leading factor in his decision to continue his career on Merseyside.
“The fans were 80 per cent of the reason I signed for Everton from Barcelona this summer after a year on loan,” Gomes said. “They made me feel wanted. It was a really good connection.
“Coming to Everton meant being in an environment where I’m comfortable in myself. I’d say last season was a big step forward for me, personally, and now I’m an Everton player full-time.”
Everton supporters were not as welcoming when Gomes shared a link to the interview on his Twitter feed, though, with many slamming his decision to speak with former Liverpool midfielder Murphy.
Here are a selection of the messages shared…
