The Brazilian appeared to sustain the injury on the slippery surface after falling over all by himself but managed to hobble off the pitch with the assistance of staff from the Merseyside club.

The 27-year-old was seen leaving the ground with a crutch and his leg in a soft brace after the game and will now miss Everton’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Watford.

The defeat to the Seagulls saw the Toffees’ linger just two points above the Premier League drop zone above the likes of Newcastle and Southampton, who both failed to win during the weekend’s fixtures.

Having only won three of their first 10 Premier League games, the injury news to Bernard was the final straw for some as the bad news continued to flow.

One fan said that the season is going from “bad to worse”, while another said that he will be sorely missed whilst out injured.
