Darren Bent has tipped Everton to have a big issue if Dominic Calvert-Lewin is rested and replaced with Cenk Tosun over the Christmas period.
Carlo Ancelotti recently admitted to the official website of the Goodison Park faithful that he will replace the England international with another striker at some point during the festive schedule in order to keep him fresh and not overwork him, but the former Spurs, Aston Villa and Sunderland striker has told Football Insider that the Merseyside club will have an issue if they do this:
“If something was to happen to Calvert-Lewin, I fear the worst for them because he is so important to what they do, I don’t know what they’d do.
“You’re talking about the guy who’s the top scorer in the Premier League being replaced by Cenk Tosun, who they tried to get rid of. That’s it right there in a nutshell.
“I mean, how can you expect there to be the same kind of production from a guy that they were ready to get rid of? It just doesn’t make any sense to me, so that’s where Everton are going to struggle, strength in depth is really going to be an issue.”
Hard to replicate Calvert-Lewin form
It would be hard for anyone in the Toffees squad to replicate the form that Calvert-Lewin has shown so far for his team so far in the 2020/21 term.
Can Everton do better than Calvert-Lewin up front?
The 23-year-old has scored no fewer than 14 goals in 14 games in all competitions for the Blues (Transfermarkt), which is a quite remarkable record that would be hard to live up to, especially during the very busy run of games ahead.
Tosun does not offer the same threat
On the other hand, Tosun is yet to score for EFC from his three matches so far in the Premier League this season and has never really been a prolific striker since his move from Turkish football.
In 54 appearances in total in all competitions for Everton, the 29-year-old has scored a mere 10 times (Transfermarkt), and so does not offer the same scoring threat as Calvert-Lewin does.
