Kevin Campbell has claimed that Alex Iwobi must do better for Everton after he was left on the bench versus Manchester United.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Toffees and Arsenal player claimed that the Nigeria international needs to be performing better considering the ability that he has, and also added that he may struggle to find his way back into the first team under Carlo Ancelotti:
“Iwobi is a frustrating player because you know the ability he has got, but it is that battle for consistency.
“A lot was expected from him when he came into Everton from Arsenal. He was seen as a player who could take them on, but they were not at that level yet. He could not do it all on his own and he has struggled.
“This is the time now where Iwobi has to pick it up. It could be a confidence thing with him.
“He is supposed to be performing better. He is a lot better than he is showing and I know his form will come back but I do not know if he will be able to get into that team with Richarlison, Rodriguez and Calvert-Lewin.
“It is going to be difficult for him. It needs to be now.”
Iwobi showed promise at Arsenal
Indeed, as Campbell suggests, Iwobi showed some promise while playing for the Gunners, breaking into the first team under Arsene Wenger in 2015 when he was just a teenager.
Should Everton cut their losses on Iwobi?
The 24-year-old scored 15 goals and made a further 27 assists in 149 games in all competitions in total for the Emirates Stadium faithful, mainly operating from the wing (Transfermarkt).
He earned himself a move to the Merseyside club back in August of last year for a sizeable £27.36m transfer fee, but it has not really worked out for him at the Blues so far.
Iwobi should be doing better
Indeed, Iwobi should be doing better given the sizeable price tag on his shoulders.
In 38 matches over all competitions for EFC over the last two consecutive terms so far, the winger has only managed to score a mere three times and supply just three assists (Transfermarkt).
Having being left on the bench against the Red Devils in their 3-1 loss, Iwobi may well find it very difficult to find his way back into the starting eleven as Campbell claims, and his performances will certainly have to improve from here on in.
