Roberto Martinez could still end up being appointed Everton manager for a second time.

The Mirror's David Maddock wrote that the Toffees will make 'one last contact' with the Belgian Football Association before they confirm Rafael Benitez's successor. Talks with The Red Devils up to this point have failed to yield an agreement, and as it stands, Martinez is due to lead the country at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of this year.

Farhad Moshiri and his backer Alisher Usmanov held talks with Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira over the weekend, but his name met 'strong resistance' elsewhere in the Everton boardroom.

Recapping Martinez's Everton tenure

Martinez succeeded David Moyes at Goodison Park in 2013 and oversaw Everton's strongest campaign since the 1980s as they finished fifth on 72 points in his first season in charge. However, things tailed off sharply thereafter, and consecutive bottom-half placings saw the Spaniard dismissed at end of 2015/16 in the wake of fan protests against his presence in the job.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed Maddock's report, and here's what some supporters made of it, with some directing their ire at Moshiri.

"Seeing this before I go to bed. Talk about the stuff of nightmares. If anything screams we are absolutely clueless at boardroom level then it is the fact this idiot is even mentioned in passing, never mind seriously considered to take over again. Beyond comprehension!"
