Many Everton fans have been left slamming the display of Mason Holgate in their 3-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s men were largely dominant at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva, as an equaliser from Richarlison in the first half was not enough for the Merseyside club.
Should Everton start Holgate in midfield?
Holgate’s performance in particular flattered to deceive several members of the Toffees faithful, as he lost out on no fewer than seven of his duels in the game, while also failing to make a single dribble, tackle, key pass or accurate cross from the right-back position (Sofascore).
The 24-year-old also lost possession of the ball 10 times, earning him a very measly six overall rating on Sofascore, the joint-lowest out of any player to have set foot on the pitch.
Everton fan reaction to Holgate display
These Blues slammed his performance on Twitter, with one EFC supporter even going as far as to describe the Englishman as having ‘jelly legs’:
“Spot on, can’t keep giving the ball away to top top sides, especially when you have such little possession. Holgate, Iwobi, Siggy, and sadly Coleman just not good enough and give cheap possession away!! Massive overhaul needed”
“I used to rate Holgate and I was one who wanted him to play more games but this season he’s been a liability both at cb and rb. Watching players just ghost past him at rb even though he’s got pace, watching him dwindle on the ball in the box v Leeds instead of clearing it”
“Holgate is a shocking right back. Worse than Coleman”
