Everton: Jamie Redknapp fumes at Lucas Digne red card decision against Southampton

Jamie Redknapp was left fuming at Kevin Friend’s decision to show Lucas Digne a red card for Everton in their defeat to Southampton this afternoon.
As per Sky Sports, the France international was given a straight red card for raking down the back of the leg of Kyle Walker-Peters, with Redknapp angrily declaring: “If that is a red card then the game is officially gone.”
Indeed, there is a debate as to whether Digne should have been sent off given that the challenge was seemingly an accident, or whether that should have mattered if the 27-year old was endangering his opponent.
Nonetheless, Redknapp believes that the ex-Barcelona defender should not have been given a straight red card.

Digne had a poor game aside from the red card
Indeed, aside from the red card, Digne arguably had a poor game anyway for the Toffees at St Mary’s. The left-back failed to make a single interception, tackle, accurate cross or key pass in the entire match, earning him a pretty poor 5.1 overall rating, the worst score out of anyone on the pitch (Sofascore).
Is Digne the best left-back in the Premier League?
Yes

No

Digne will now be banned for the next three games for the Merseyside club, unless his dismissal is overturned.
Digne will be a miss
Aside from the red card offence, Digne has been in fine form for Carlo Ancelotti’s team so far this season, and will therefore be a miss while he is out of action.
The full-back has won 5.4 of his duels per game in the top flight and also averaged a rather impressive 3.8 clearances, 2.2 key passes, 2.2 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per match (Sofascore).
Nonetheless, Digne will now have to sit out the next few games in what could be a big blow for the Toffees.
