As per the print edition of The Sunday Mirror (29/08, p74, via TBR Football), Everton are eyeing a late move for Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard before the end of the transfer window.

The Lowdown: Benitez looking to strengthen

So far this summer, the Toffees have brought in four new faces but have spent a grand total of just £1.8m (Transfermarkt).

As such, it could be a busy last couple of the days for the Merseyside club as they finalise their squad for the rest of the campaign.

The Latest: Toffees eye Lingard

According to this latest report, Everton are looking to take England international Lingard to Goodison Park.

West Ham are also looking at the attacking midfielder in a potential £15m swoop, but the Toffees are looking to derail that move with an offer of their own. [The Sunday Mirror (29/08, p74), via TBR Football]

The Verdict: Plenty of talent

Lingard shone on loan with the Hammers during the second half of last term - in 16 games with the Irons, he scored nine goals and created five more, which took his senior career goal tally to 55. However, he has played just four minutes during the opening three Premier League matches of Manchester United's season, and the impending arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford is unlikely to do himself any favours.

He could be a fantastic signing for Everton if they can win this transfer race. The Goodison Park club have started the season fantastically, picking up seven points in their first three top-flight games (Sky Sports), and the potential addition of Lingard could offer them an extra attacking threat throughout the campaign.

In other news, many Everton fans were delighted with transfer news on this striker.
