In an exclusive interview with the Liverpool Echo, Everton star Richarlison revealed exactly why he signed a new five-year contract back in December, citing the fact that he ‘loves‘ the club and the fans in particular.
Speaking at Woolton Primary School as part of the Everton School Supporter’s Club initiative, teaching children aged between five and 11 how to showcase a noteworthy goal celebration before sitting down to speak to the Echo, Richarlison revealed why he signed a new contract at Goodison Park back in December.
The Brazilian, who has scored 10 goals and assisted three others in 25 Premier League starts this campaign (WhoScored), has arguably been one of Everton’s key players, with only striking partner Dominic Calvert-Lewin finding the net more often (12).
Indeed, the 22-year-old’s form could have been a catalyst for the sensational rumours of an £85m bid from Barcelona for the player at the end of the January transfer window (Sky Sports), reports that have since been rubbished by the club (Daily Mirror). Now, speaking on his decision to commit to Merseyside, Richarlison has claimed that the club and fans alike were a huge influence to sign on the dotted line, going on to explain how he ‘didn’t think twice‘.
“There was little time [between the offer and me signing the contract],” he explained to the Echo.
“There were some small things in there but I decided to renew my contract because I really like the club and the fans. I didn’t think twice about renewing because I really like it here and I want to stay here and be at this club.”
Due to the youngster’s prolific form this season, it’s safe to say that this will be music to the ears of Toffees supporters, with both himself and Calvert-Lewin forming a deadly striking partnership with a combined 22 league goals so far. If Richarlison can build on this brilliant run, he could continue to be a mainstay as Carlo Ancelotti’s side chase a coveted European spot.
