Our Everton fans here in the Transfer Tavern thought things had been going well for too long this season as it now appears a pretty significant spanner is going to be thrown into the works.
Indeed, the Toffees have been flying in 2017 and look well on-course to play in Europe in 2017/18.
For that, though, they’ll undoubtedly need extra players to come in as well as needing to keep their current big stars.
For sure, the likes of Romelu Lukaku need to be kept at the club but many are doubting whether the Toffees really have the ambition to take the Belgian striker to where he wants to be.
Certainly, writing in his latest column for Boylesports, Stan Collymore is of that opinion with the former Liverpool man saying someone like Spurs should go after him in the summer.
What will really rankle with the Everton faithful, though, is the ex-striker’s opinion that Everton aren’t going to improve in the next couple of years.
He said:
“Seventh is the summit of Everton’s ambitions for the next two seasons.”
A bold claim from Collymore, for sure, given how close the Toffees are to the top six, and with their investment and decent form in mind, too, there is little to suggest that they can’t bridge that gap.
