The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are surprised by this one…
Chelsea’s pursuit for a defensive rebuild has been long documented, with the Blues seemingly keen to land an experienced defender to take over the reigns from John Terry.
The long-standing Chelsea captain has been injured as of late, and at present his Chelsea future beyond the end of the season remains unclear.
Chelsea have, in recent weeks, been touted with making several big money moves in the British press, with Leonardo Bonucci reportedly a primary target of Antonio Conte – but could the Blues get what they want for free?
It appears that way, as according to the Mirror, Real Madrid veteran Pepe could be set for the exit door at the end of the season; and he has reportedly seen Chelsea as a potential destination.
Pepe, who wants a 2-year-deal with the Spanish giants, has only been offered a 1-year contract; and the Mirror are suggesting that his representatives think that Chelsea would be willing to offer him an extended stay.
Whilst Pepe would no doubt be low-down on Chelsea’s list of potential targets, the financial benefits of the deal could swing any transfer in his favour.
Of course, all talk is purely speculation at this point – but Pepe would not come with a transfer fee and if Chelsea could negotiate a low wage outlay; the deal could prove fruitful.
Our landlord has implored the Chelsea faithful to keep one eye on this deal, as it does make a lot of sense.
Far more sense than splashing out a world-record fee on an ageing player like Bonucci, at least.
Pepe is showing no signs of slowing down, having already picked up 4 league appearances so far this season – and this is off the back of a successful summer in France with his native Portugal, as his side won the coveted 2016 European Championship.
The Chelsea fans in the Tavern are slowly coming around to this deal…
