Steve Howey has hinted that Newcastle should have been in the running to sign Danny Ings, who he thinks guarantees goals.
With Ings having entered the final 12 months of his contract at Southampton, he made a surprise move to Aston Villa earlier this month despite being on the radar of both Tottenham and Manchester City.
Should Newcastle sell Longstaff?
Yes
No
He’s established himself as one of the lethal marksmen in the Premier League in recent seasons, netting 55 times for Burnley, Liverpool, and the Saints.
Newcastle have another proven goalscorer in their ranks in Callum Wilson, who netted 12 goals in only 26 appearances in his debut season on Tyneside, outscoring the likes of Marcus Rashford, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling.
But Wilson remains Steve Bruce’s only trusted striker at the club, with both Joelinton and Dwight Gayle simply not cutting the mustard at St James’ Park.
And Howey looked back at not signing Ings as an opportunity missed when exclusively speaking to The Transfer Tavern:
“I have always liked Danny Ings and you would pay decent money for him, but if he’s fit, you are guaranteed goals, the same as Wilson.”
