‘Best news in years’, ‘Thank goodness’ - Fans express relief at recent Rangers news

Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been very vocal with regards to the goings-on at their club this week, with defeat to Motherwell and a draw against Kilmarnock ultimately bringing about the end for manager Pedro Caixinha.

The 46-year-old took over at Ibrox back in March but has struggled to bridge the gap to rivals Celtic, with Brendan Rodgers’ side finishing a staggering 39 points clear of the Gers in the Scottish Premiership table last season. And an embarrassing defeat to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn in the first qualifying round of the Europa League back in July did little to help the Portuguese’s cause, and a recent run of disappointing results has seen Caixinha pay for his job, with him officially relieved of his duties on Thursday.

And, unsurprisingly, much of the talk among our resident Rangers supporters in the Tavern has been about who will be their next manager, but reports on Friday suggest that it won’t be former Derby County and Nottingham Forest chief Billy Davies.

The 53-year-old has been out of the game since losing his job at the City Ground back in March 2014, but he did enjoy a substantial chunk of his playing career north of the border, and indeed spent three years at Rangers between 1981 and 1984.

And the former defender was linked with taking over the reins at Ibrox following Caixinha’s dismissal, yet recent reports suggest that he is ‘unlikely’ to be interviewed by the club’s hierarchy.

And this news has stimulated quite a response from Gers supporters on Twitter, and it’s fair to say that they are relieved that Davies is no longer in the frame for the vacant post at their club…
