‘Up there with the very best’ – Trevor Sinclair names Man City player in same league as Messi
Former Manchester City midfielder Trevor Sinclair has claimed that Raheem Sterling should be compared with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the best players in the world.
Sterling has begun this season in rampant goalscoring form for club and country, notching six times for City and helping himself to a goal in each of England’s European Championship qualifiers in the past week.
Sinclair heaped high praise on Sterling for his recent performances – so much so, that he feels the England winger should be mentioned in the same breath as the footballing heavyweights.
Speaking to TalkSPORT, Sinclair said: “Raheem Sterling is right at the top of the tree, for me. If he’s not worth £200m now, I’d be surprised.
“He’s the best player playing for England and he’s the first player on the team sheet for Pep Guardiola.
“The big question now is where do you put him with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo? I would put him right amongst them. He’s there now.
“If you look at other players who have gone for big money and you look at what they bring to the table, the goals, the assists, the way they conduct themselves off the field – he’s right up there with the very best in the world.”
Sinclair makes a point about money – though that would hardly make a claim for Sterling to be among the world’s best in the current climate.
That’s especially if you consider the likes of Messi and Ronaldo – the former of which has not moved from Barcelona since signing as a youngster. Meanwhile, Ronaldo, who moved to Juventus in a £99.2m move from Real Madrid last year, would hardly be considered one of the world’s best if you were to simply judge ability by price tag – given that the world record stands at £200m.
So for Sterling and his own market value (incidentally priced at £126m by Transfermarkt), he needn’t worry about his stature amongst his peers, for only he can control his destiny in his footballing career, whatever his value may be.
Manchester City fans – how good is Raheem Sterling? As good as Messi and Ronaldo – or even better, perhaps? Let us know by entering the discussion below!
