The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued at reports linking their side with a move for Ross Barkley…

The Englishman looks set to leave Everton this summer, and with just one year remaining on his current contract, he may be available.

He has been highly-rated for some time, and has been a key part of the Everton first team for much of his professional career.

However, whilst the move may seem exciting to some, Chelsea need to be careful. He has been poor over the last year or so, and even Ronald Koeman – a manager that become famed for his man management – has struggled to get the best out of him. Chelsea must not sign him just because he is English and available. There isn’t exactly a real need for a player in his position either, which makes their interest even more strange.

Rather, the Blues could look towards a few other young English talents if they are looking to bolster their homegrown quota – as there are far more talented players than Ross Barkley out there.

Here are just two examples…

Tom Davies

For starters, Antonio Conte could try and sign the player that appears to have taken over from Barkley at Everton – Tom Davies.

He enjoyed a breakout campaign last year, in stark contrast to Ross Barkley, and despite being a teenager, he has fit right in under Ronald Koeman.

Offering a real offensive threat and a passionate and committed style of play – he could be perfect.

He’ll be a very expensive option, but if Conte is looking for young English talent – they don’t come any better.

 Danny Rose

Danny Rose would be a very tough player to get from Tottenham, but what a signing he would be. He has struggled with injury as of late, but his quality is indisputable.

Chelsea lack depth on the left-hand side of the defence, and Rose is amongst Europe’s best in the position – and could be perfect at Stamford Bridge.

It would be a difficult deal to complete, but with Chelsea reportedly open to spending over £60 million to fill their left-back spot – Rose may well be available for less.
