The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are in agreement that Roberto Firmino is the most under-appreciated member of the squad at Anfield. The Brazilian is often overshadowed by the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, and that gave him relatively few of the headlines last season.
However, whilst Firmino does deserve more praise, our landlord isn’t sure that he’s the most under-appreciated member of the squad. In fact, he thinks that honour should instead go to midfielder James Milner.
Milner has rarely been the star of the show at Anfield, but the role he has played has been huge.
The Englishman has often been the heartbeat of the team when he’s played, and he’s often performed better than players years younger than him.
Offering brilliant energy, passion and determination, he was the player that made the team tick en route to the Champions League final.
Let’s not forget, too, he filled in brilliantly at left-back in the season before last, and despite it not being a natural position for him, he was sensational in the role.
Even when he’s not playing, he continues to play a role. He’s one of the leaders in the dressing room, and even off the field, the Englishman is as influential as ever.
In truth, Milner’s capture at Anfield is quickly looking like a steal for the club – and he’s one of Klopp’s most important players right now.
