To the despair of many of the Liverpool fans that are regulars here in the Transfer Tavern, reports have broken around the media outlets that Mario Gotze is set to stay at Bayern Munich.
It’s a twist in this transfer story that many had not expected but now it seems the Reds will need to focus elsewhere in their attempts to recruit new players.
Manager Jurgen Klopp is preparing to embark on his first Summer transfer window at the Anfield club and will be aiming to bring in signings that can help the club improve on their eighth place Premier League finish and climb towards the top four.
Time will tell who the former Dortmund manager does bring in but with a few months left to pursue potential players – the window isn’t even open yet – there’ll be plenty of rumours to replace the Gotze ones.
The Reds then, may have missed out on the World Cup winner, but our landlord at the Transfer Tavern thinks this FIVE would be more than suitable alternatives.

Rachid Ghezzal
Ghezzal has been a regular in Lyon’s team this year and has ten goals in 38 appearances in all competitions.
A right winger that likes to cut inside on his left foot he has five caps for the Algerian national team and could be available for a cheaper price than Gotze.
He is 24-years-old so has time on his side, and this would only bode well with Jurgen Klopp helping develop his talent.
Mahmoud Dahoud
Dahoud is a great young player that can operate right through the middle of midfield in attacking and defending roles.
He’s yet to play for the German senior side but has two caps at Under-21 level and it’s when not if regarding his full debut.
He has made 41 appearances for Monchengladbach in all competitions scoring five goals as well as adding nine assists and is set for a great career.
Ante Coric
Coric may just be 19 but he’s established himself in Dinamo Zagreb’s side. Five goals from 41 appearances and another six assists shows that he’s got some talent and he’ll be moving to one of Europe’s big leagues before too long.
It’s been reported that Klopp has tried to already meet the young Croatian and the German will feel he is the best chance for Coric to fulfil his potential.
Piotr Zielinski
Zielinski played for Empoli this season in Serie A though his parent club is actually Udinese.
The central midfielder has racked up 13 appearances for the senior Polish team, notching three goals and he’s also averaged a goal every seven games in the Italian top division this season, laying on six assists.
Zielinski is another player with years ahead of him and he would learn a lot under Jurgen Klopp.
Yacine Brahimi
Brahimi is a fast winger who currently plays for Porto.
The Portuguese giants are going through a pretty unsuccessful period at the moment – given their history – and Brahimi may want to jump ship in the hunt for medals.
Liverpool reached two finals this season falling short on both occasions, but Klopp knows his team will learn from the experience and the Porto winger could be part of the team to banish this season’s woes.
