Manchester United fans are still buzzing here in the Football Transfer Tavern after their side’s 4-2 derby demolition of Manchester City – and watching Jamie Carragher do the unthinkable by comparing them to the Barcelona side of 2010 on Monday Night Football.
With Louis van Gaal’s side having all but secured themselves a place in the top four and a return to Champions League football, some supporters have turned their attentions to next season, and which next superstar may find themselves arriving at Old Trafford in the summer.
United have spent more than any other side in the country over the past two years, and the spending looks set to continue once the transfer window opens at the end of the season.
Here we have gone through all the rumours, and identified five signings that United fans may just have to keep dreaming about – as we don’t think they will be happening any time soon.

Cristiano Ronaldo
It’s the same every transfer window.
Manchester United fans start to speculate Cristiano Ronaldo may be on the verge of returning ‘home’, and he is yet to come close.
Ronaldo will be looking to guide Real Madrid to back-to-back Champions League titles this season, whilst also continue the same kind of form that saw him named the world’s best player just a few months ago.
Neither the player nor his club seems interested in a transfer at the moment, or any time soon for that matter.
Raheem Sterling
The Liverpool man has certainly been in the headlines lately, with some reports going as far to suggest Manchester United are ready to make a move after his contract talks with the Reds stalled.
Sterling admitted to turning down a contract offer of £100,000 a week to stay at Anfield, and United are one of the few clubs capable of offering the type of money he wants.
But Liverpool selling arguably their most prized assets to their biggest rivals? This isn’t FIFA.
Paul Pogba
Like Ronaldo, there are suggestions Paul Pogba will return to Manchester United with every passing transfer window.
United were foolish to let him join Juventus on a free transfer back in 2012, and are said to be willing to pay up to £70million to get him back.
The problem is that Real Madrid have also registered an interest, and when Europe’s most successful club come calling, there are very few players who turn them down.
Danny Ings
The 22-year-old has caught the attentions of a number of clubs with his performances this season, having scored nine Premier League goals for a Burnley side bravely battling against relegation.
With his contract up at the end of the season, Ings will be allowed to move clubs on a free transfer – and reports suggest Manchester United have joined the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Real Sociedad in the hunt.
Whilst Ings looks a decent player, whether he is Manchester United quality is questionable – whilst Louis van Gaal has also spoken highly of homegrown forward James Wilson on occasions this season.
A move for Ings would simply push Wilson further back down the pecking order, whilst the England under-21 would be competing with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie for regular playing time.
Luis Suarez
The Uruguayan only left England in a £75million deal last summer, yet that hasn’t stopped various reports linking him with a return throughout the season.
After a slow start by his standards at Barcelona, reports suggested Manchester United were monitoring his situation closely, with a view to making a summer bid.
Suarez has fired 16 goals in 32 appearances at the Nou Camp, and won the majority of the fans over already. The fact he is ex-Liverpool would also surely work against United were they to ever attempt and sign him.
