Sheffield Wednesday: Garry Monk reveals that the club hopes to renew Steven Fletcher’s contract

Sheffield Wednesday are in talks to extend Steven Fletcher’s contract, according to Garry Monk (via the club’s official Twitter account).

The striker’s current deal expires at the end of the season along with a number of other senior players, and the Owls boss stated that he is hopeful of getting a deal done with the Scot.

Fletcher’s representatives are reportedly in talks with the South Yorkshire outfit with a view to a renewal, and the 32-year-old signing would likely be a big relief for many connected to the club.

Fans have been singing his praises recently and calling on the club to give him a new contract, and since he has 13 goals in 21 league starts this campaign he is probably also highly thought of by Monk.

The former Swansea boss is certainly well-respected by Fletcher, who suggested he was the best manager he has worked under, and that good relationship should increase the chances of him extending his stay at Hillsborough.

Wednesday will need him to do just that considering the difference he has made to the team this season.

The recent poor run that saw the Owls win just one league game in 11 coincided with Fletcher’s absence from the team, with a knee injury ruling him out from mid-December until the game against Birmingham last weekend.

His last-gasp winner against Charlton in mid-week showed he has a knack for getting into the right positions to score goals, and the three points he was responsible for underline his importance to the team.

Sheffield Wednesday will also likely lose Jordan Rhodes as his contract also expires in the summer, while Connor Wickham’s loan will be up, and that means the club could face a situation where they are worryingly low on strikers.

So Wednesday fans are you keen to see Steven Fletcher given a new deal and could this be a vital development for the club? Let us know in the comments below…
