Gerrard must seek reunion with ex-England teammate to take Rangers to next level

Rangers supporters have been somewhat satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team draw 1-1 with Aberdeen on Tuesday night to remain in contention for second place in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers went into their clash at Pittodrie knowing that defeat to Derek McInnes’ side would see the Dons secure the runners-up spot in the division, and they looked on course to do just that when Kenny McLean’s spot-kick gave them a first half lead. However, the Light Blues hit back in the second period through Ross McCrorie to earn a point from the encounter, thus leaving Rangers a point behind Aberdeen heading into the final round of fixtures this weekend.

And with the Gers traveling to Hibernian and Aberdeen visiting champions Celtic, several of our resident Rangers fans remain pretty confident that their team can indeed seal second place, thus setting new manager Steven Gerrard up well when he takes the reins next season.

And already our resident Light Blues supporters are speculating upon which big names the Liverpool legend may well be able to attract to Ibrox, with many of the opinion that a reunion with ex-England teammate Gareth Barry could serve Rangers well in the coming years.

Ultimately, the 37-year-old continues to play at a high level having spent the season at West Brom, and although the Baggies were confirmed as relegated on Tuesday night, the Englishman has once again proven his worth with 25 Premier League appearances this term.

Yes, his best days are behind him and he perhaps isn’t as influential and significant as he once was, but there is little doubting that Barry still retains huge ability in the middle of the park – the sort of ability that could see Rangers move to the next level next season.

Clearly, the Gers have got a lot of work to do in bridging the gap to Celtic as, although the points difference won’t be as big as last season, the games between the two in recent weeks have underlined the gulf in class between the Old Firm rivals.

And signings of the calibre of Barry, someone who can control and dominate the midfield in breaking up play and also helping to launch attacks, will be exactly what new boss Gerrard is targeting this summer.

The 37-year-old will know first-hand of Barry’s expertise having played together for England in years gone by, while his vast amounts of experience (no-one has played more Premier League games than the midfielder) will surely serve to help the younger members of the Rangers squad.

As such, while some of our resident Gers fans are unsure about Barry given his age, he remains a class act on the field and would certainly add a great deal to Rangers’ midfield department.

In fact, landing the 37-year-old could see the Light Blues move to the next level under Gerrard next time round.

Rangers fans… what do you think? Let us know!
