Glasgow Rangers: Fans slam James Tavernier’s performance in defeat at Bayer Leverkusen

Glasgow Rangers captain James Tavernier came in for criticism from a number of the club’s fans over his performance in Thursday’s 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen which ended their involvement in the Europa League.

The 28-year-old was caught out for the game’s decisive moment as he failed to match the run of Moussa Diaby, who latched on to a Charles Aranguiz pass and fired the ball past Allan McGregor for the only goal of the evening (as per BBC).

Tavernier struggled to rein in the scorer all evening, coughing up three shots to Diaby before being substituted for youngster Nathan Patterson with 13 minutes remaining. The ‘Gers captain failed to win any tackles or make any interceptions, while he was culpable of nine inaccurate passes and lost possession 15 times during a match that he will want to forget. The right-back had been a tremendous attacking outlet during the 2019/20 season, contributing no fewer than 15 assists, but only three of those have come this side of New Year’s Day and just one was in the Europa League proper. [via TransferMarkt]
