Glasgow Rangers: Gers had interest in Souleyman Doumbia before Angers move

As per Goal.com, Glasgow Rangers were interested in Souleyman Doumbia before he completed a permanent move to Angers this summer.

Doumbia spent the second half of last season on loan at Angers from Stade Rennais.

Now, he has completed a move to the fellow French outfit for a reported fee of €3m (£2.7m) – but that was only after the Gers had held an interest in the 23-year-old.

Surprisingly, Angers have decided they want him full time despite him making just five appearances for them in Ligue 1 – that number would likely have been higher, though, had it not been for the current pandemic. They won three and lost two of those matches, but interestingly conceded just two goals with Doumbia on the left side of the back four.

He appears to be stronger on the defensive side, having made two tackles per match, and he was dribbled past on just 0.2 occasions per game. He would have provided an pragmatic contrast to Borna Barisic – the Croatia international managed 14 assists in all competitions in the previous term.

At 23, and with three caps for the Ivory Coast already under his belt, he could have been an interesting option for the Gers – now, though, they have moved for Calvin Bassey instead. It remains to be seen whether that proves to be the correct decision.
