Glasgow Rangers are set to miss out on Dion McGhee, as it has emerged that Portuguese duo Benfica and Porto are set to fight it out for the 19-year-old’s signature.

McGhee recently left Manchester United, and as such would be available on a free transfer.

The Gers had been linked with a move for the teenager, but it now appears that the two Portuguese giants are set to do battle to capture his services.

This would be a bitter blow for Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson. The indication given recent transfer activity is that the Ibrox outfit are looking to rejuvenate their squad and add plenty of fresh blood to the side – Ianis Hagi and Calvin Bassey, both of whom have made the move to the 54-time Scottish champions this summer, are aged 21 and 20 respectively, whilst teenagers Charlie Lindsay and James Graham have also made the switch.

Clearly, McGhee is highly rated across Europe, otherwise two sides likes those ones previously mentioned would not be in pursuit. Gerrard was said to be keen to keep him in the UK, but it looks like he has lost that particular battle. Back to the drawing board in this case.
