Good news for Chelsea as club reportedly close in on defender deal

It’s been a slow day so far for the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, but is business picking up?

Time is running out for the Blues as they look to tie up a few more deals, but it appears as though at least one player could be on their way to Stamford Bridge today.

According to Italian site Gianluca Di Marzio, Torino defender Davide Zappacosta is closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge, with a deal of around €25 million (£23 million) plus add-ons reportedly agreed between the two clubs.

Deadline day always brings with it a dose of speculation and a variety of stories, but this deal has come out of the blue even in that context – with the Blues not linked with the defender up until this point.

Still, a deal appears very close indeed – with Chelsea seemingly closing in on that elusive first signing of the day.

A full-back by trade, it would be wise to assume that Zappacosta will, at least initially, be viewed as an understudy to Victor Moses – with the defender very well versed both offensively and defensively.

At 25-years-old, he is in the prime of his career, and Chelsea look set to pounce.

Landlord’s Verdict

Antonio Conte will be well aware of the defender, having featured in the Italian national side for the last year. He has been with Torino since 2015.

Whilst the deal has come out of nowhere for us, there’s no doubting that the Blues will have been tracking him for quite some time, and Conte will know what he is doing. If he can have a similar effect to Marcos Alonso – who was signed in similar circumstances last season – the fans in the Tavern will be delighted.
