The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern have been mesmerised by their team’s formidable run of victories this season…
Earlier this week, the Citizens continued their record-breaking winning run with yet another late victory at home to Southampton after a cagey affair at the Etihad Stadium. As the clock ticked into the the fifth and final minute of injury time, City’s run of 18 victories on the bounce looked destined to end, but in-form Raheem Sterling came up with the goods for the third successive match to provide City with a last-gasp winner.
Sterling’s progress under manager Pep Guardiola has been one of the major success stories in a campaign littered with notable improvements from individuals within the club. The 22-year-old England international has certainly taken his fair share of criticism during his career so far, but he has firmly silenced those critics with his stupendous form this season.
However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Sterling may face fresh competition for his place in January, with Guardiola still eagerly pursuing the signature of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.
Yet, with Sterling beginning to blossom into a fine and indispensable player, and adding plenty of goals to his game in the process, City should forget about bringing Sanchez to the Etihad.
Sterling has raced to the top of City’s goal-scoring charts this season, and his knack for finding the back of the net in the most crucial moments has been a vital component of the Citizens’ success.
Intriguingly, City were heavily linked with Sanchez in the summer transfer window, with Sterling rumoured to be heading in the opposite direction as part of a swap deal.
But with the Englishman in such blistering form this season, a move for Sanchez seems slightly nonsensical given that the 22-year-old winger is six years younger than the Chile international.
Guardiola appears to have made it his mission to help Sterling continue to grow as a player, and if he wishes to maximise his potential, then he should abandon his pursuit of Sanchez and invest his complete faith in Sterling.
