Rangers: Heart & Hand call for Allan McGregor to be dropped

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor warms up

Rangers podcaster and official media partner Heart & Hand has called for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to drop goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

The lowdown

The recriminations are underway after the Premiership champions let slip a two-goal lead at home to Motherwell on Sunday.

The draw meant that Van Bronckhorst’s side missed the opportunity to reduce Celtic’s lead at the top of the table to a single point after the Hoops were held by Hibernian earlier in the day.

McGregor was deemed to be partly culpable for Kaiyne Woolery’s equaliser 15 minutes from time, with sports journalist Josh Bunting saying that the 27-year-old’s effort should ‘never’ have got past the veteran ‘as easily as it did’.

The 40-year-old could well be coming towards the end of his Ibrox career, with his contract due to expire in the summer and no expectation at this point that he will be handed a new deal.

The latest

In a tweet on Sunday afternoon, Heart & Hand bemoaned the latest dropped points from Rangers and called for McGregor to be taken out of the starting XI.

They tweeted: “Rangers seem determined to chuck this league away. Two vital points completely thrown away. McGregor can’t go on.”

The verdict

Bunting echoed these sentiments, declaring that the Scotsman was ‘sadly done’ and needed to be ‘taken out of the Rangers team’. The journalist believes that Jon McLaughlin should take up the first-choice goalkeeping role ‘maybe until the end of the season’.

The ex-Sunderland netminder started six of the first 11 Premiership games this season as Steven Gerrard rotated his goalkeepers, but McGregor has since established himself as clear first choice with 17 league starts in succession.

The 40-year-old, who earns £13,000 per week in Glasgow, has been a tremendous servant for the club, making 427 appearances and winning 12 trophies, but you could argue that there’s no room for sentiment in a closely-fought title battle, so maybe Van Bronckhorst needs to make a big decision in terms of his starting goalkeepers.
