Arsene Wenger really is the manager fans love to hate, his seeming deterioration at Arsenal has made him the victim of a volley of abuse from his home crowd, not to mention the butt of many a debate in the merciless world of Twitter.
John Cross, columnist at The Mirror poured out his thoughts and feelings on the recent attacks and accusations that were directed at the sour-faced Gunners boss. He defended the Frenchman, stating his recent lapse is nothing more than an occupational hazard.
‘He’s a brilliant manager…surely Wenger deserves respect and patience – at least until the end of the season.’
This debate of course all started with the recent chants Wenger endured last sunday. ‘You don’t know what you’re doing!’ was the response from the crowd at The Emirates, and cowering in his fortress, Arsene undoubtably felt the stab in the back from an often adoring stadium.
The question indeed exists, does Wenger deserve to be in this firing line? Is he a washed out memory of what he once was, or does the veteran Frenchman still have what it takes to take Arsenal back to the top.
It is so easy to criticise Wenger, from his seeming inability to spot an Arsenal foul, to his outrage at any glimpse of a card against his precious players, as a manager he certainly has heard it all. As much as it may be true that the Gunners gaffer should ‘lighten up a bit’, to be doubted as a manager from his own fans is far too much.
As Cross agrees, Arsenal are still a top flight club, and it is too easy for fans to lose faith after a losing streak.
What fans must realise is this, Wenger isn’t a miracle worker, he is more that girl that got away, not appreciated when he’s there, but sorely missed if he left!
