‘Home of football’ - Arsenal fans on Twitter lament life without Highbury after club’s post

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to the club’s tweet, commemorating the 12 years that have passed since Arsenal stopped playing their home games at Highbury back on the 8th May 2006. The fans have been showing what Highbury meant to them as some fans would happily see the club move back to the famous old ground, although there are no chances of that as the stadium no longer exists.

Arsenal have been playing their home games at The Emirates since the 2006/07 season, after the demolition of Highbury, although the club has struggled to recreate their trophy-winning form since they up stakes from Highbury. In the 12 years they’ve spent at The Emirates the club have won just three FA Cups and three community shields, all of those coming in the last five years.

Arsene Wenger oversaw the move from Highbury to The Emirates and did a superb job to keep the team somewhat competitive despite the lack of funding that he suffered with throughout the club’s move. The construction of The Emirates cost around £390 million meaning Wenger had little money to splash in the transfer windows. Now though, the club look to be getting over their financial weight that was placed on them as they’ve forked out large fees for the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez over the last few years.
