The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are pinching themselves after reading rumours in The Mirror linking them with the World Cup-winning goalscorer of 2014, Mario Gotze. The last four years have been tough for the German star and he’s now apparently eyeing up a Premier League move to try and revive his career, with a potential fee of £18 million being looked at by five clubs.

It’s true that Rafa Benitez hasn’t been looking at an attacking midfielder this summer, if the opportunity arises to sign a player who’s scored a World Cup winning goal, you have to take it. Gotze has been left out of Germany’s World Cup squad alongside the likes of Bernd Leno and Leroy Sane and he’ll be looking for a move away from Dortmund this summer, although the club will be hopeful of recouping £18 million for him.
After scoring such a huge goal for his nation at the age of 22, many fans predicted a downwards path for Gotze and after a number of injuries and having picked up a metabolic disease that was discovered in February 2017, the player’s season was over. The attacking midfielder will be hoping that his next move can be one to get his career back on track and if he chooses St James Park, he can guarantee that the fans will get behind him and he’ll be well received, something that a player low on confidence like Gotze could really do with at this stage.

The Newcastle fans propping our bar up aren’t used to being linked with such big-name players, despite the fact Mario Gotze is as washed up as they get. If the club did loosen the purse strings and bring him in though, it would be a huge statement of intent from Mike Ashley.
