Man Utd’s transfer policy this summer has been far from perfect. With only a week to go until the window slams shut, the Red Devils need to up their game.
The signings of Fred and Diogo Dalot are clearly important, and Lee Grant is a useful addition, but it’s clear that further improvement is needed.
However, amidst all the talk of a few new faces on the pitch, there is also talk of a potential new face on the sidelines. According to the Sun, Man Utd are considering replacing Jose Mourinho with Zinedine Zidane – if the Portuguese decides to leave the club, or, indeed, if he is forced out.
If Zidane does join the club, he – like Mourinho – will be expecting a few major changes, especially when you contrast the current squad at Old Trafford with that at Real Madrid.
He should, then, only accept the post on the basis of landing a few new faces, and these TWO major signings would be a good place to start…
Raphael Varane has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, and much of that development has been made under Zidane.
The Frenchman has won the Champions League and the World Cup over the last few months – which is a testament to his quality.
If there is one area in the Man Utd squad that needs improvement, it’s the heart of the defence, and the Red Devils would struggle to do better than Varane.
He’s genuinely one of the best defenders in Europe at present, and he’d be a sizeable upgrade on the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
One thing that Zinedine Zidane will have to change at Old Trafford is a lack of creativity, and creative midfielder Nabil Fekir could resultantly be a sensible target.
Though Man Utd have a lot of attacking midfielders, they don’t have many that are able to create magic for others going forward – many are more focused on driving forward and achieving personal success.
This is where Fekir could, theoretically, come in.
He bagged 8 assists last season, in addition to 18 goals, and so his impact going forward is clearly sensational.
He could help Man Utd be far more potent going forward.
