Introducing: Alexander Kacaniklic as the ideal short-term signing Leeds missed out on

Leeds United were in the January transfer market for a new winger, however, they failed to make an addition in that department.

The Whites were close to bringing Swansea City’s Daniel James on Deadline Day, but things did not go as planned as a move collapsed in the final moments, per The Mirror.

A number of other names were linked with Marcelo Bielsa’s side throughout the month of January, with the likes of Ibai Gomez and Steven Zuber having both been strongly linked.

However, the Spanish winger decided to return to Athletic Bilbao, whilst the Switzerland international headed to VfB Stuttgart on a loan deal until the end of the season.

With the free agent a market still open, provided a player’s contract was terminated or expired before a deadline, the Championship side could still look to snap up someone to help add depth to the position.

However, it appears that one man that could have been an ideal short-term fix for The Whites is no longer available.

Alexander Kacaniklic, up until a few days ago, was a free agent and available for clubs to talk to about a potential deal.

A former Sweden international, the winger knows English football really well as he came through the academy ranks at Liverpool before spells at Burnley, Watford and Fulham.

Kacaniklic has had a bit of a nomadic career as of late, with spells at Copenhagen and Nantes both not quite working out for him.

Still only 27-years-old, the midfielder has amassed over 100 appearances in the Championship and Premier League in his career and has the ability to find the back of the net and pick out a pass – something Bielsa wanted to add to his squad.

And, they may have benefitted from the fact that he still has something left to prove in the English game.

The Swede could have handed Leeds some experience in the middle of the park, as well as offering the club another option as a central midfielder and may have been a great short-term addition this winter.

However, as mentioned, Kacaniklic is no longer a free agent as he has recently joined Hammarby on a two-year contract, per Transfermarkt.

Bielsa and Leeds may have missed out on the ideal addition this winter without even knowing that he was available.
