Arsenal’s challenge for a Premier League title is well under way this season and our Gunners fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping dearly it is their year.

However, most of them here by the bar can’t help but feel pessimistic as they are just waiting for it to all come crashing down like it has done so often before in recent years.

But, Wenger may be able to change the fans expectations if he can invest in January.

Whilst it may be too expensive to spend on Premier League stars, Serie A in Italy could be a brilliant league for Wenger to find his next star player.

The Italian league is currently on the rise once more and it would be wise for fans in the Transfer Tavern to keep one eye on it at least.

Here, then, according to our landlord are three players from the Serie A that Wenger should sign in January…

Gianluigi Donnarumma

The young Italian keeper was first introduced to us fully last season and this season he has lived up to his reputation as being Italy’s next number 1.

Whilst he may not play for the Gunners this season should he sign, having a player of Donnarumma’s quality would help boost Arsenal’s already strong goalkeeping lineup.

Plus, having Petr Cech as a mentor is bound to make the Italian improve for when he makes his Arsenal debut.

Dries Mertens

The Napoli player has been unbelievable in the Serie A this season and this was demonstrated recently by the winger scoring four goals against Torino, who had England international Joe Hart in goal.

This season Mertens has scored 14 goals and it looks like his goal scoring record is only going to increase.

Whilst Arsenal may not desperately need a new winger, having a player like Mertens would definitely make the Gunners stronger.

Stefan De Vrij 

The 24-year-old defender could be the player that Wenger needs in January.

With Wenger’s issues with his defensive injuries, it may be important to bring in another big name to not only rival the current defenders but to ensure that he has a solid back line regardless of fitness issues.

De Vrij is highly regarded at Lazio and so Wenger may need to pay a lot for the defender but if he can bring the Netherlands international in then he will have certainly solidified his defence.
